Geography

Intent

Our Geography curriculum is designed to cultivate lifelong learners with a deep curiosity about the world. Beginning in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage One, we lay the foundation by exploring the familiar, starting with the school and its immediate surroundings, before expanding to encompass the vibrant city of Hull. As our children progress, they embark on a global journey, delving into diverse places and cultures across the planet. We are committed to developing skilled geographers, putting an emphasis on fieldwork to provide rich, hands-on learning experiences that extend our learning beyond the classroom.

Implementation

Our Geography curriculum unfolds across the academic year, split into three key parts:

·         Autumn term is dedicated to building foundational map skills and locational knowledge, equipping students with the ability to identify global locations and utilise mapping and compass techniques.

·         Spring term brings a focus on local fieldwork, providing hands-on opportunities to explore and investigate geography around us. This engaging topic promotes inquiry skills and the children learn to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features in their local area. They become skilled geographers by using a range of data collection methods, including sketch maps, plans and graphs, and digital technologies.

·         Summer term allows the children to embark on a journey to explore diverse countries worldwide, delving into both human and physical geography.

Our structured approach ensures a comprehensive and engaging learning experience, progressively building geographical understanding and skills.

Impact

  • Children are skilled geographers, asking questions about the world they live in and caring for the world in which they are a part of.
  • Children are equipped with the geographical skills to complete fieldwork, including using compass directions and mapping.
  • Children can talk confidently about the details of physical and human geography of a range of places around the world.
